Trees for the Future Wins UN World Restoration Flagship Award

Trees for the Future (TREES), a non-profit organization, is reversing the trend of desertification in Africa. They empower smallholder farmers in several countries to fight soil degradation, biodiversity loss, and climate change. This success story recently earned them recognition as a UN World Restoration Flagship.

From Barren Land to Abundance

TREES’ impact is undeniable. They’ve restored vast swathes of land, with farmers like Paul Magna in Kenya now enjoying bountiful harvests of vegetables and fruits. Since 2014, TREES has restored an area the size of Tanzania’s capital and supported over 50,000 families. Their methods also capture significant amounts of carbon dioxide, mitigating climate change.

We believe in a world where farmers leave a legacy of opportunity through sustainable land practices. We are witnessing farmers reclaiming their agency, breaking the cycles of climate change and generational poverty, and rebuilding our food systems from the ground up. Our mission is to improve livelihoods of impoverished farmers by revitalizing degraded lands.

The Forest Garden Approach

The key to TREES’ success is the Forest Garden Approach. This regenerative agroforestry technique involves training farmers to plant a diverse mix of trees, food crops, and resource plants on their land. This not only provides food and income security but also improves soil health and biodiversity.

A Beacon of Hope for Africa

TREES’ efforts are crucial for Africa’s future. With a growing population, fertile lands are shrinking. By restoring degraded lands, TREES is ensuring food security and improving the lives of countless families.

Scaling Up Success

As a World Restoration Flagship, TREES gains access to UN support and resources. This will allow them to expand their reach, restoring even more land and creating jobs. Their ambitious goal is to restore an area nearly 30 times the size of Senegal’s capital by 2030.

A Global Movement

TREES’ work is part of a larger movement – the UN Decade on Ecosystem Restoration. This initiative aims to revive billions of hectares of degraded ecosystems worldwide. By showcasing success stories like TREES, the UN hopes to inspire large-scale restoration efforts around the globe.
