And the award for biggest Oscar nomination snub goes to…
The Oscar nominations for 2019 were announced on Tuesday, and while there weren’t too many surprises, there were definitely some snubs that stand out! Were you as shocked about these as we were?
While Best Picture, is a fairly predictable category, it was noticeable that First Man wasn’t included. It got a few nominations including visual effects and sound effects, however the Damien Chazelle-directed film was shut out of some major nominations, including best picture, director and supporting actress for Claire Foy as wife Janet Armstrong. Not to mention…Ryan Gosling for best Actor. Although Gosling had rave reviews for his performance as astronaut Neil Armstrong, it seems that wasn’t enough to pull through for a best actor nomination.
It’s exciting that a super hero movie made it to the best picture category – box office hit Black Panther – though it was snubbed for best director, actor, and actress.
The biggest surprise perhaps, is in the best director category with Bradley Cooper not nominated for a Star is Born. The movie did well with many nominations including Best Picture, Best Actor, Best Actress…but it appears to have directed itself!
The BBC points out, “The eight nominations received by A Star Is Born include two nods for Bradley Cooper in the best actor and adapted screenplay categories. Yet Cooper didn’t land a best director nomination for his work behind the camera – an omission that does not bode well for his film’s chances of winning best picture.
“Only two films in Academy Awards history – Driving Miss Daisy and Argo – have won best picture without also getting a nomination in the best director category. The same logic would seem to hobble Green Book, whose five nominations do not include a best director nod for Peter Farrelly.”
Fans of Mary Poppins Returns will have noticed a few snubs too. Director Rob Marshall’s lovingly crafted musical sequel to 1964’s Mary Poppins received four nominations, including best score and best song for ‘The Place Where Lost Things Go.’ But it turns out that Academy voters shut out Mary Poppins Returns from the major awards, such as best picture, best actress for Blunt, supporting actor for Lin-Manuel Miranda, and best director.
