On My Block: Season 2 | Clip: Cold Opening

An intriguing if not altogether enlightening teaser for season 2 of Netflix’s On My Block seems to address at least one of the cliffhangers from the debut season: actor Jason Genao’s character Ruby Martinez doesn’t seem to be among those who won’t be coming back to the show.

Netflix released the cold open of the first second season episode – the series returns March 29 – and the mood is, at least initially, pretty grim. We see a series of sidewalk and alleyway memorials to the victims of violence in the South Central L.A. neighborhood. As Monse (Sierra Capri) and Cesar Diaz (Diego Tinoco) get ready for a funeral and Jamal (Brett Gray) luxuriates in a boatload of cash, the silent footage finally settles on the eyes-closed face of Ruby, who was shot in the cliffhanger. We see he’s wearing a suit, and his head is resting on what certainly appears to be the silk pillow of a casket.

The coming of age dramedy was co-created by Lauren Iungerich (Awkward) and Eddie Gonzalez & Jeremy Haft (All Eyez On Me) and chronicles the lives of four friends navigating, as Netflix describes it, “their way through the triumph, pain and the newness of high-school…in the rough inner city.”

Promises Netflix: “In Season 2 the friends lean on each other like never before in the aftermath of tragedy and Jamal’s discovery.”

Last October, Netflix announced that Jessica Marie Garcia has been upped from recurring to series regular for season 2 of the series co-created and executive produced by Lauren Iungerich, Eddie Gonzalez and Jeremy Haft.

On My Block season two arrives on Netflix March 29.
