Depeche Mode strike an iron-fisted pose in the stark new video for “Where’s the Revolution” off their upcoming album, Spirit.
Directed by frequent collaborator and music video mastermind Anton Corbijn, the predominately black-and-white clip finds the British outfit presiding over militaristic marchers and flag-wavers in an empty industrial square. While the dystopic visuals pair perfectly with the ominous clang of “Where’s the Revolution,” the video is cut through with a dark sense of humor, from Dave Gahan’s dictatorial flourishes to the lock-step chugging he, Andrew Fletcher and Martin Gore do while donning bushy Karl Marx beards.
Depeche Mode will release Spirit March 17th. The album was produced by James Ford (Florence and the Machine, Arctic Monkeys) and marks their first album since 2013’s Delta Machine. In an interview with Rolling Stone, Gahan spoke about the sense of worldwide worry and melancholy that permeates the record, but stopped short calling it overtly political.
“I wouldn’t call this a political album,” Gahan said, “because I don’t listen to music in a political way. But it’s definitely about humanity, and our place in that.”
Following the release of Spirit, Depeche Mode will embark on a world tour May 5th in Stockholm. The group is expected to tour North America this summer, though dates have yet to be announced.
