The Chainsmokers And Coldplay Team Up For Surprise Single ‘Something Just Like This’
The production duo took to the stage at the BRIT Awards to debut a new tune entitled “Something Just Like This” with little warning. There had been rumors that some new music was on the way, but since they had just recently given the world another hit single, few could have imagined they would drop what could be another big tune so quickly.
The Chainsmokers have a reputation for partnering with up-and-coming talents in the pop world for help when it comes to vocals on most of their tracks, but this time around, they looked towards the top of the charts for help. Coldplay’s Chris Martin takes up singing duties on the upbeat, loving track, which sounds like a perfect blend of the current sound that has been working for Coldplay with a Chainsmokers-style EDM-pop drop reminiscent of their 2016 hit single “Roses.” Martin isn’t credited as a solo act, instead opting to include his bandmates in what will surely be a charting hit in the coming weeks.
The release of “Something Just Like This” comes as something of a surprise given that the electronic duo is still busy promoting two other singles. Just last month, the NYC-based pairing dropped “Paris,” which sees member Drew Taggart fronting the majority of the vocals for the first time on a major single. That song debuted within the top 10 in both the U.S. and the U.K., and since then it has gone on to spend a handful of weeks inside the highest tier on the charts.
While “Paris” rises and falls, their biggest hit to date is still riding high, and it looks like the only thing that might take it down is another Chainsmokers radio smash. “Closer,” which features pop singer Halsey, ran the Hot 100 for an incredible 12 weeks straight last year, making it the longest-running chart-topper of 2016 and the fourth longest-running No. 1 hit of all time (a title it shares with a number of other super smashes).
“Something Just Like This” is expected to be featured on The Chainsmokers’ upcoming debut full-length album, which will be out at some point later in 2017. For a while, it looked as if the duo wasn’t going to ever give their fans a complete album, but rather stick with EPs, which are cheaper to buy and more quickly consumable. After asking their massive fan base what they wanted, Alex Pall and Drew Taggart were immediately greeted with a resounding cry for more music, The Chainsmokers debut album ‘Memories… Do Not Open’ out April 7th featuring “Something Just Like This”, “Paris” and 10 brand new songs from The Chainsmokers!
