UMBC’s incredible NCCA win over Virginia

The most unbelievable, the most unlikely upset in the history of the NCAA tournament happened Friday night when UMBC — that’s University of Maryland, Baltimore County — took down the No. 1 overall seed Virginia. It was the first time a 16 seed ever beat a top seed, and it wasn’t even close.

The NCAA Division I Men’s Basketball Tournament (known informally as March Madness) is a single-elimination tournament played each spring in the United States, currently featuring 68 college basketball teams from the Division I level of the National Collegiate Athletic Association (NCAA).

After first half that ended tied at 21, the Retrievers surged in the second half, climbing to an unexpectedly large double-digit lead and upsetting the Cavaliers, 74-54.

There was no last-second fouling for jaw-dropping buzzer-beater. This was a dominant win by a team that perhaps everyone — except the actual members of the team — assumed would fall to UVA.
