THE PEASANTS: a Visually Stunning Story about Women

Using an advanced oil painting animation technique, The Peasants is a visually thrilling rendering of a Polish Nobel Prize-winning tale and is selected as Poland’s entry for the 96th Academy Awards.

THE PEASANTS tells the story of Jagna, a young woman determined to forge her own path within the confines of a late 19th century Polish village — a hotbed of gossip and on-going feuds, held together, rich and poor, by pride in their land, adherence to colorful traditions and a deep-rooted patriarchy. When Jagna finds herself caught between the conflicting desires of the village’s richest farmer, his eldest son and other leading men of the community, her resistance puts her on a tragic collision course with the community around her.

THE PEASANTS (Original Title: Chłopi) is the latest film from Oscar, Golden Globe and BAFTA nominated directors DK Welchman and Hugh Welchman. Following on the success of her previous film Loving Vincent, which grossed $42 million at the box office, The Peasants will be produced in the same painting technique that won the hearts of fans around the world. The story is based upon the Nobel Prize winning novel by Wladyslaw Reymont. This unique microworld of rural community is a pretext to tell a universal and current story. A story of tragic love and life in a small community, where rules and tradition dictate everyone’s role, and stepping outside of what’s expected of you could result in ridicule and rejection.

“After years of working on a film about Vincent van Gogh I felt a strong need to tell a story about women: to show their struggles and their passion and their strength.”  – Dorota Kobiela, Writer / Director.
