Star Wars: The Last Jedi. Arriving in your galaxy December 15.
The official trailer for the latest installment of the “Star Wars” movie franchise was released on Friday, and the social media universe roared its approval like a Wookiee playing a holographic chess game.
The trailer for “Star Wars: The Last Jedi” offered glimpses of characters from the previous film, “The Force Awakens,” including Kylo Ren, Rey, Finn, Poe Dameron and the rolling ball of a droid, BB-8.
The trailer opens with a closeup of Rey’s palm landing hard on a rock and she is breathing heavily.
The camera pans to a vast expanse of ocean and appears to zoom in to the island where the final scene of “The Force Awakens” took place.
“Now reach out,” a voice says, and the camera cuts to what appears to be Rey’s fingertips on the ground and pebbles rising around her — perhaps in a demonstration of her using The Force?
“What do you see?” the voice asks.
“Light. Darkness,” she replies. “The balance is so much bigger.”
Interspersed are images of an unknown person with braided hair who is seen from behind and a fractured, smoking collection of black pieces, possibly from a mask, as the theme music for Kylo Ren, the wayward son of Han Solo and Leia Organa, plays.
The music crescendos as scenes of spacecraft moving toward Imperial AT-ATs appear followed by a glimpse of intense dogfights in space with the Millennium Falcon and other craft and then more images of Rey and Kylo Ren, each carrying light sabers.
In the closing scene, a figure is seen at the entrance to a cave and a voice says: “I know only one truth. It is time for the Jedi to end.”
The trailer’s release was timed for Star Wars Celebration, the annual fan event that features panels with the film’s creators and performers.
