The World Association of Girl Guides and Girl Scouts (WAGGGS) has been the Charity of Choice for International Women’s Day since 2007.
As the largest voluntary movement dedicated to educating and empowering girls and young women in the world, the work that WAGGGS does globally really resonates with the IWD 2024 #InspireInclusion campaign theme.
“Our connection with International Women’s Day is a very important partnership for us. It provides an opportunity to celebrate the achievements of millions of girls and women worldwide and to come together across sectors to raise awareness of the need for greater progress on gender equality. Through Girl Guiding and Girl Scouting we are breaking gender bias, discrimination, and stereotypes, and we are supporting our girls and young women to do the same. Thank you for choosing to #InspireInclusion with us in 2024.”
– Anna Segall, Chief Executive Officer, World Association of Girl Guides and Girl Scouts –

8.9 million members, 153 countries, 1 million committed volunteers
As the global umbrella organisation for Girl Guides and Girl Scouts across the globe, WAGGGS has gender equality at its heart and puts girls and young women at the very centre of its work. With the vision to ensure that every and any girl feels confident to lead and empowered to create a better world, WAGGGS gives girls the opportunity to develop the skills and knowledge they need to raise their voices, defend their ideas, and contribute to shaping a better world. WAGGGS also plays a key role in keeping the global Guiding movement united, thriving, and growing so that it continues to create generations of happy, capable, and daring girls.
Through non-formal education programmes, WAGGGS encourages girls and young women to take the lead in their own development, learning to support each other through cooperation and teamwork while building crucial life skills. Programmes cover a range of issues relevant to girls everywhere from internet safety, climate change, menstrual health and hygiene, STEM education and careers, body confidence, leadership, and international experiences. The programmes always encourage girls to share what they have learnt more widely within their communities. Girl Guides and Girl Scouts are active agents of change who dedicate time to educate, raise awareness and advocate, bringing about positive change on issues affecting girls.
A glimpse into some of WAGGGS’ impactful programmes and projects
The Surf Smart internet safety programme was developed in partnership with Gen/Norton and has so far reached over 600,000 girls and young women giving them the tools they need to stay safe online.
Over the last ten years, through a partnership with the Dove Self Esteem Project, the Free Being Me programme has reached over 6.5 million young lives with body confidence and self-esteem activities.
Working alongside WASH United, the Rosie’s World Menstrual Health & Hygiene programme has been delivered in 14 African countries directly reaching 90,000 girls.
As part of the Girl-Led Action on Climate Change (GLACC) programme a team of 7 girl guides and girl scouts from around the world travelled to Dubai in December 2023 to attend COP28 – the world’s largest climate change event. The delegation spoke out, shared their concerns and their key demands to the international community and called for greater involvement for girls and women in the climate debate. GLACC was created with the support of AKO Foundation and the Swedish Postcode Foundation.
For almost ten years the Youth Exchange South to South international exchange programme in partnership with NOREC has given young women from the Girl Guiding and Girl Scouting movement in Africa and Asia-Pacific a once in a lifetime opportunity to live and volunteer in another country for six months to one year.
WAGGGS is always looking for new partners to help continue or expand programmes to reach more girls and young women in more locations. If your organisation would like to discuss the many ways in which a partnership can work, please get in touch with the WAGGGS team directly.
